September 4, 2026With Jamaican and South African roots, a reggae musician for a father, and a mother who dreamed of becoming a songwriter, Paynter grew up in a creative environment that naturally shaped his approach to music. He began writing poetry and raps at around ten years old, eventually developing a sound that moves fluidly between alternative R&B, hip-hop, folk, and textured indie-pop.
A trip to Los Angeles in 2022 became an important turning point, opening the door to songwriting and production opportunities with other artists while Paynter continued developing his own catalogue.
Following singles including “maple brown,” “skin!,” “403 westbound,” and “genny please!,” Paynter introduced his debut EP, is anybody home!?, in May 2026. The six-track project brings together organic instrumentation, alternative R&B, folk elements, and electronic textures, giving his songwriting plenty of room to breathe.
At the centre of the EP is “clear blue!,” a four-minute-plus track that highlights Paynter’s more atmospheric and melodic side. “clear blue!” captures what makes Jahson Paynter’s music interesting: rather than staying inside one genre, he uses R&B, folk, hip-hop, and live instrumentation as different pieces of the same creative language.
It’s a strong introduction to an artist building an increasingly distinctive sound out of personal songwriting and a wide-ranging musical background.
