The term “Gara” translates to “blessing” in the Songhoy language, encapsulating the song’s core message of reverence for ancestral wisdom .
Formed in Bamako after being displaced from their northern Mali homes due to civil conflict, Songhoy Blues blends traditional Malian music with blues and rock influences, creating a unique sound that resonates globally . Their music often addresses social issues, aiming to preserve and celebrate Malian culture .
“Gara” is featured on their fourth studio album, Héritage, released this past January 17, 2025. This album marks a return to acoustic roots, showcasing collaborations with various Malian musicians and emphasizing the country’s rich musical heritage .
