Beaugé – Akuma’s Shadow Looms feat. The Legend Adam Bomb
July 13, 2024Palestinian-Canadian artist Nemahsis is back with her highly anticipated second single of the year, “you wore it better.” This vulnerable track offers a deep dive into her psyche, exploring themes of self-worth and living one’s truth.
Opening with dreamy harpsichord lines, Nemahsis’ ethereal vocals immediately captivate as she sings about the fear of letting people get too close. The gentle guitar strums and drum machine percussion create a soothing background as she croons, “‘Cause once you know, what’s lying underneath / Judgement shows, I’m not deceiving / And you chose how you want to / See me.” The celestial chorus flourishes with grooving bass and warm piano riffs, all while she sings poignant lines like, “You wore it better / Than I could ever / Nothing’s gonna change the fact / That you can wear it better.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Jack Peros, is a mesmerizing one-take visual that follows Nemahsis as she runs through the woods, mirroring the song’s theme of self-acceptance and the struggle with comparison. “My friend once wore this T-shirt, and I wanted to look as cool as them, so I bought a matching one,” Nemahsis explains. “It took me years to comfortably wear it because I had convinced myself it didn’t look as good on me as it did on them. Writing this song brought back this memory, and I just laughed a little.”
Back in November, Nemahsis made headlines when her record label dropped her for “speaking up against the occupation of my homeland, Palestine.” Now, she’s taking charge, releasing music independently, including her previous single, “Stick of Gum,” which marked a bold new chapter in her career.
